Lighting the Chanukiyah

Place the Chanukiyah (Chanukah M'norah) as close to a window as possible to publicize the great event of our survival as a minority within a majority. Only candles or oil lamps fulfill the obligation to light the lights of the holidays. Electric ones can be used only to publicize the day's grandeur and are used without the recitation of the Brachot, praises of God.

First Day

  1. Place the candle to be lit on the far right holder.
  2. Light the Shamash, helper candle that will light all the other candles.
  3. Say the B'rachah - Ba-ruch A-tah A-DO-NAI, E-lo-hey-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, A-sheyr Kid'-sha-nu B'-mitz-vo-tav, V'-tzi-va-nu, L'-had-lik Ney Shel Cha-nu-kah.
  4. Say the B'rachah - Ba-ruch A-tah A-DO-NAI, E-lo-hey-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, She-a-sa Ni-sim La-vo-tey-nu Ba-ya-mim Ha-heym Ba-z'-man Ha-zeh.
  5. On the first day ONLY - Ba-ruch A-tah A-DO-NAI, E-lo-hey-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, She-he-che-ya-nu, V'-ki-y'-ma-nu V'-hi-hi-ya-nu La-z'-man Ha-zeh.
  6. Light the candle.
  7. Sing Ma-oz Tzur and other songs.

Days 2 - 8

  1. Put the candles in the Chanukiyah RIGHT to LEFT:
    1. Example: on day 2: 2-1; on day 5: 5-4-3-2-1; on day 8: 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
  2. Light the Shamash, helper candle that will light all the other candles.

    Also say - Ba-ruch A-tah A-DO-NAI, E-lo-hey-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, She-a-sa Ni-sim La-vo-tey-nu Ba-ya-mim Ha-heym Ba-z'-man Ha-zeh.

  4. Light the candles LEFT to RIGHT:
    1. Example: on day 2: 1st 2nd; on day 5: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th; on day 8: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and lastly 8th.
